Short Story Reads: Why does the Child cry by Mulk Raj Anand

Why does the child cry by Mulk Raj Anand is one of the best short stories I’ve ever read. Undoubtedly so, Mulk Raj Anand was a keen observer of human emotions whose succinct, complete and lucid verse is simply mesmerizing and haunting. Why does the Child cry is no exception yet it is like no other story. Although narrated from the third person’s perspective, the protagonist of the story is seven-year old Abdul Latif who lives with his parents in a village in Bengal. Although somewhat slow in terms of physical agility, he makes up for it with his intelligence and mental agility.

While life goes on as it has always been in this mofussil part of the world, Latif returns home one day to fear the unknown, the ravages and disappearance of war. While I won’t give the plot away, this story is certainly a must-read.
